SNEAKERS THAT FIT

In memory of Dr. Barry Levin

Who doesn’t enjoy a new pair of sneakers? For a child it is the promise of running races, shooting baskets, an air of “cool” and just plain being comfortable! That is the case for most of our children, but right here, in our local Orlando area community, there are children for whom this is only a dream. This is the reason that over 20 years ago Congregation of Reform Judaism began the project SNEAKERS THAT FIT.

Each year, beginning November 1 and lasting through December 7, the Social Action Committee of CRJ presents the SNEAKERS THAT FIT project. During this period of time we partner with 4 Title l schools, one of which is ASPIRE Academy housed here at CRJ, for students in need of new sneakers.  For one month, with the participation of the congregants, we collect monetary donations as well as donations of shoes in specific sizes to deliver to the designated schools before the winter holiday break.

We need you! This is one of the easiest, yet one of the most impactful projects, we undertake during the school year.  The information will appear in the Chai as well as on a bulletin board placed outside the sanctuary. The bulletin board will contain ID cards for the needs of specific students. Last year we provided over 300 pairs of sneakers. In addition to the shoes that are donated by you we need to raise approximately $4,000 to fill the need. You have the choice of making the shopping a Hanukah family life lesson or donating to the project. Your dollars go far in this endeavor.  A $25 donation will buy a new pair of sneakers as well as a pair of socks. Our partner, The Reebok Outlet, has loyally assisted us with purchasing the most for our money in fitting these little feet in need.

Please designate on your check, SNEAKERS THAT FIT.
