Elul: A Month of Connection
Elul: A Month of Connection
It is a Jewish tradition to recite Psalm 27 each day of Elul. The words can be found HERE. Perhaps daily recitation isn't quite your speed, and that is totally okay. There are several amazing composers who have put these words to music in their own way, often focusing on the phrase achat sh'alti, only one thing to do I ask of God.
I invite you to give these various interpretations a listen. If this is a new concept or practice for you, perhaps start slow and listen to one a week. I have made an attempt at putting an adjective to these composers, you might interpret it differently as that is often what art does for us.
Composed by Chava Mirel, click HERE to listen. This is soft and filled with hope.
Duet written by Lea Kalish, click HERE to listen. This has a variety of sounds in the duet and a bit of joy.
Sung by Azi Schwartz, click HERE to listen. This feels like the High Holy Days in intensity.
Written by Aly Halpert, click HERE to listen. This has a gentle yearning quality.
I hope you try it out and let me know what you think and how this helps prepare you for the High Holy Days ahead.
