Curriculum

The Pre-k through Sixth grade curriculum is designed to engage the student, allowing for discovery of an individual sense of Jewish self and a deeper foundation of our Jewish traditions and values. Knowledge of the alef-bet, Hebrew decoding, prayer book skills, with a touch of modern Hebrew are built upon throughout the grades. Our curriculum utilizes the latest books and materials from Behrman House. Online resources are also utilized with our newest addition of iPads. Teacher-made curriculum also enhances learning.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN

Pre-K is a time to explore first beginnings in a child’s Jewish journey. Through music, stories, art projects, and other hands-on and minds-on learning, children will gain meaningful Jewish educational and social connections. Children will have the chance to build friendships and make special memories.

KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE

Kindergarten is the time for discovery – discovery about the holidays, the synagogue, the beginning of the Torah and God. First Grade is a time of exploring- exploring Shabbat, being Jewish, our Matriarchs and Patriarchs and mitzvot.

In kindergarten and first grade, the children discover and explore Hebrew, with an introduction to Hebrew letters and language. Kindergarteners participate in their Confirmation ceremony.

SECOND GRADE

Students in second grade are continuing to discover their Jewish identity through the exploration of mitzvot, Israel and Bible stories.

Utilizing teacher-made curriculum, students continue learning the building blocks of the Hebrew language.

THIRD GRADE

In third grade, students explore how to be a mensch (good person) and also study Israel through a scavenger hunt. Students learn to further blend Hebrew letters and vowels and by the end of the year are able to read basic prayers. Third grade is the official welcome to Hebrew with the Kabbalat Ivrit ceremony.

FOURTH GRADE THROUGH SIXTH GRADE

In fourth grade, students explore the Bible and Jewish values and further delve into the holidays. Fourth graders continue learning prayers.

Fifth Grade students study ethics and making connections to our Jewish text and building Jewish identity. Sixth Grade is an opportunity for the students to explore their relationship with God and Israel. Fifth and Sixth graders explore the meanings and learn different ways of singing/chanting prayers through the latest Hebrew in Harmony curriculum.

ZOOM ONLINE HEBREW

Students in grades 3-6 who are unable to regularly attend Wednesday school may participate in a regularly scheduled weekly half hour online small group Hebrew tutoring session with a teacher. This option must be approved by the Director of Education and will be available at an additional fee.

MISHPACHA DAYS & CLASS SHABBATS

Family parent participation days are rich opportunities for you and your children to study together with their teachers, clergy and the director of education. Each grade has a very special morning of making connections to topics of Reform Jewish learning.

During the course of the year, each class will have the opportunity to participate in leading services at either a Friday or Saturday Shabbat service. These services are a wonderful way for your child’s class to work together to be leaders in our community.  We will be working alongside the Rabbi and Cantor in order to prepare the students for the service.

SEVENTH THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE

Students enter YALA, a new and groundbreaking program engaging 7th-12th graders in innovative, fun, relevant, Jewish learning and social experiences. Click for more information on YALA
