Sisterhood
- Women of CRJ
President: Dorey Wolf
Who
we are: The sisterhood at CRJ is an affiliated member of the national
organization Women of Reform Judaism. WRJ is the women’s affiliate of
the Union for Reform Judaism in North America. We are a fun group of smart
Jewish women who care about our Judaism, our families, our congregation and
our world.
Our history: WRJ has a rich history. It was established in 1913 as
the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (NFTS). The intent of the organization
was to educate and train female leadership to ensure the survival of the reform
movement. This was organized during a time of intense struggle for recognition
of equality for women politically in the USA, as well as in their religious
practices. WRJ is responsible for founding NFTY, and establishing youth groups
in the reform movement.
Exploring membership: Sisterhood is a way to bring the women of the congregation
together through social, advocacy and spiritual gatherings. Sisterhood is
a great place to encourage networking for personal, professional, political
and humanitarian causes, leadership opportunities, support for Israel, and
educational activities. Most women who join our sisterhood are involved in
programs and planning sporadically. We are a diverse group of women who are
professional, family-oriented, and busy. Our programming realizes that “one
size does not fit all” and we try to offer quality programs on many
topics at different days and times to accommodate the busy schedules of our
members. This allows for smaller groups, as well as more intimate and meaningful
interactions. Got an idea? Contact us! We’ll try almost anything once!
Benefits of affiliation: Membership gives you the communal
voice to be linked with 75,000 Jewish women nationwide who are like-minded….talk
about a “power trip!” You can be provided with information through
the WRJ website to keep you informed on current issues and gender sensitive
spiritual concerns. Whether you attend many or just one of our events, your
membership money is put to good use. We donate most of our budget directly
back to the temple in the form of scholarships, underwriting youth events,
contributions to planned activities, or providing emergency funds for unplanned
expenses. There is no reason not to join because you benefit in so many different
ways.
